In a significant leap towards smart urban mobility, Mumbai has launched a revolutionary contactless travel card—’Mumbai 1’—that promises to transform the way citizens navigate the city’s vast public transport network. With this integrated smart card, commuters can now access local trains, metro services, monorail, and BEST buses using a single payment system.

The initiative was officially launched by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, marking a milestone in the city’s journey toward seamless, tech-driven transportation.

One City, One Card

The ‘Mumbai 1’ card simplifies travel by offering contactless, tap-and-go transactions, eliminating the need to buy separate tickets for each leg of a journey. Commuters will no longer need to stand in long queues or handle multiple fare systems—everything is now unified under a single, secure payment platform.

The card, co-branded by the State Bank of India (SBI) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is expected to significantly improve convenience, reduce travel time, and promote the use of public transport.

Key Features of the ‘Mumbai 1’ Smart Card:

  • Integrated Ticketing: Usable across Mumbai’s local trains, metro, monorail, and buses.
  • Contactless Payment: Simply tap to enter or exit, enhancing ease of travel.
  • Enhanced Security: Embedded chip technology safeguards user data and transactions.
  • Reduced Wait Times: Minimizes ticket counter queues and speeds up boarding.

Easy to Use:

The card operates on a pay-as-you-go model and is issued with a validity period printed at the time of issuance. In case of loss or damage, a nominal replacement fee of ₹100 applies.

The Maharashtra government plans to make the card available throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) within a month, ensuring widespread access for daily commuters.

With this move, Mumbai joins a growing list of global cities that offer unified, user-friendly public transport systems, setting a new benchmark for Indian urban transit.
