To Enhance Security and Travel Efficiency

In a significant push towards modernization and enhanced travel security, the Government of India has officially begun the nationwide rollout of chip-based electronic passports (e-passports). These next-generation travel documents are embedded with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips and antennas, adding a new layer of security and efficiency to the passport system.

The e-passports, developed under the upgraded Passport Seva Program (PSP) Version 2.0, represent a major technological leap. Each passport includes digitally encrypted data stored within the chip alongside the printed information, making counterfeiting extremely difficult. The embedded chips also ensure faster and more secure identity verification at immigration checkpoints.

Importantly, the new e-passports are fully compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, enabling smooth processing at international e-gates and automated border control systems across the world. This is expected to be a game-changer for Indian travellers, who will benefit from quicker immigration clearance and reduced wait times at airports globally.

The nationwide expansion is set to continue through 2025, with the government working to equip more passport offices with the necessary infrastructure and staff training. Officials emphasize that the transition is not only about security but also about significantly enhancing the travel experience for Indian citizens.

As more regional offices come online, the Ministry of External Affairs is urging applicants to opt for the new e-passports during renewal or fresh application, signaling a full transition to digital documentation in the coming years.

This development marks a crucial step in India’s digital transformation journey and reflects the country’s commitment to aligning with global standards in travel documentation and border security.
