Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is set to receive the inaugural R.K. Laxman Award for Excellence, an honour dedicated to celebrating the timeless legacy of legendary cartoonist R.K. Laxman. The award will be presented during a special tribute event in Pune, marking a heartfelt gesture from Laxman’s family to commemorate his unparalleled contribution to art and storytelling.
The R.K. Laxman family has planned a grand live concert by music maestro A.R. Rahman as part of the celebration, which will take place on November 23, 2025, at the MCA Cricket Stadium, Pune, starting from 5 PM onwards. The event aims to blend music, art, and emotion to honour the memory of one of India’s most beloved creative icons.
Confirming the news, Usha Laxman, daughter-in-law of the late cartoonist, shared with IANS, “The R.K. Laxman family has organized an A.R. Rahman live music concert on Sunday, 23rd November, at the MCA Cricket Stadium. During the event, we will be instituting the first-ever R.K. Laxman Award for Excellence as a tribute to him.”
She further revealed that the first recipient of the award will be none other than Aamir Khan, saying, “This is our biggest tribute to Laxman — honouring excellence through someone who represents creativity and perfection.”
R.K. Laxman remains a towering figure in Indian art and literature, best remembered for his iconic creation ‘The Common Man’ and his long-running cartoon strip ‘You Said It’, which brilliantly captured the everyday struggles and humour of Indian life.
Beyond his cartoons, Laxman also lent his artistic genius to the classic television series ‘Malgudi Days’, based on stories by his elder brother R.K. Narayan, directed by Shankar Nag.
Throughout his illustrious career, Laxman received numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan (1973), the Padma Vibhushan (2005), and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Mysore (2004). He passed away in 2015 at the age of 93 in Pune’s Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, leaving behind an unmatched creative legacy.
With Aamir Khan being chosen as the first recipient of this prestigious honour, the event promises to be a memorable celebration of artistic brilliance.
