The familiar cough, fever and fatigue doing the rounds this monsoon deserve a little more attention this year. H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, is seeing a rise in cases across parts of India, with Delhi alone recording 1,777 confirmed H1N1 cases as of August 21, according to health department data. Karnataka has also reported more than 4,000 cases this year. The rise has prompted health authorities to reinforce basic precautions, from respiratory hygiene to timely medical care.

While there is no reason to panic, it is a good time to rethink everyday health habits. H1N1 spreads primarily through respiratory droplets, making crowded spaces, close contact and poor respiratory hygiene important factors to be mindful of. Washing hands frequently, avoiding unnecessary touching of the face and covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing remain some of the simplest ways to reduce transmission. Wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces can add another layer of protection, particularly when flu activity is high.

Wellness at home matters too. A balanced plate can help you maintain your overall health while your body deals with seasonal infections. Include plenty of seasonal fruits and vegetables, protein-rich foods, whole grains and nourishing home-cooked meals. Citrus fruits, guava, amla and other fruit and vegetable sources of vitamin C can be part of a varied diet, while eggs, pulses, dairy, nuts and seeds provide useful sources of protein and other nutrients. Rather than chasing a single “immunity-boosting” food, focus on consistency, variety and adequate nourishment.

Hydration is equally important. Water, soups, coconut water and other fluids can help maintain hydration, particularly if you develop fever. Sleep should also move higher up the priority list. A few nights of proper rest, along with manageable stress levels, can support overall wellbeing far better than pushing through exhaustion.

Fitness, meanwhile, should be about balance. Regular walking, stretching, yoga or moderate exercise can keep you active, but intense workouts are best avoided when you are feverish, unusually fatigued or unwell. Give the body time to recover instead of treating rest as lost productivity.

Most importantly, don’t dismiss persistent flu-like symptoms. Fever, cough, sore throat, headache, body aches and fatigue are among the symptoms associated with influenza. If symptoms persist or become severe particularly with breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion or significant weakness medical attention should be sought promptly.

The takeaway is simple: staying healthy during a flu surge does not require complicated routines. Clean hands, fresh and nourishing food, adequate fluids, quality sleep, sensible movement and knowing when to slow down can make everyday wellness a much stronger first line of defence.
