In a major move aimed at easing travel and boosting digital infrastructure, the Government of India has announced the launch of the FASTag Annual Pass, effective August 15, 2025. Announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the initiative offers private vehicle owners toll-free access to national highways for an entire year, all for a one-time annual fee of ₹3,000.

Implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), this prepaid scheme allows users up to 200 toll-free trips annually, or unlimited highway travel, depending on usage patterns. The plan is specifically designed to benefit frequent commuters, especially those traveling between cities for work, business, or family visits.

The pass integrates seamlessly with existing FASTag RFID technology, promoting cashless transactions, reducing toll plaza congestion, and cutting down fuel consumption from idling vehicles. Officials say the funds collected will support road maintenance, highway safety improvements, and infrastructure development.

Activation is completely online via the NHAI portal or FASTag mobile app, aligning with India’s push toward a digital-first economy. Experts suggest this could be a game-changer for highway travel, especially in a country where road transport remains a primary mode of transit.

The government has hinted at future expansion of FASTag benefits into urban tolls and congestion zones, further modernizing India’s transport systems.

Will this pass deliver on its promise of convenience, savings, and smoother travel?
