As the monsoon sweeps across the country, bringing much-needed relief from the summer heat, it also opens the door to a different set of health concerns. Beyond the usual coughs, colds, and seasonal infections, many people quietly experience joint stiffness, muscular aches, and an increase in chronic pain conditions — especially in the knees, spine, and shoulders. While most attribute it to “weather change,” experts say there’s more science to the seasonal shift than meets the eye.
According to Dr. Ramesh Katewa, owner of Global Physiotherapy Clinic ,Gurugram with over 15 years of clinical experience, the monsoon season often triggers a rise in complaints related to joint pain and postural stiffness, particularly among the elderly and sedentary individuals.
“Humidity levels during the monsoon affect the pressure inside our joints. This leads to swelling, reduced mobility, and pain especially in people with arthritis, past injuries, or prolonged desk jobs. Physiotherapy becomes essential not just for pain relief but also for improving flexibility and circulation during this time,” says Dr. Katewa.
The dip in temperature and spike in atmospheric moisture can cause muscle contractions and joint fluid thickening, making the body feel heavier and less mobile. Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, frozen shoulder, cervical spondylosis, and lower back pain tend to worsen during these damp months. But experts warn that even younger, active individuals aren’t immune especially those working long hours from home or skipping workouts due to rain.
That’s where physiotherapy plays a pivotal role. With tailored mobility exercises, manual therapy, and posture correction routines, physiotherapy not only reduces pain but also prevents long-term damage. Dr. Katewa emphasizes the importance of active rehabilitation over passive rest, noting that gentle movement often does more good than painkillers in managing weather-induced discomfort.
Hydrotherapy, dry needling, and guided stretching routines are increasingly being recommended to combat stiffness and inflammation. For desk-bound professionals, simple desk exercises and regular posture checks are now being included in preventive physiotherapy sessions.
Dr. Katewa adds, “Monsoon is not the time to ignore your body’s warning signs. If you wake up with stiffness or feel recurring discomfort after a short walk or task, seek a physio evaluation. Catching these signs early prevents bigger problems down the line.
So while you enjoy the rains outside, don’t let your joints pay the price.
