Indian Railways passengers booking e-tickets can now opt for travel insurance at an ultra-low premium of just Rs 0.45 per person, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha in a written statement.
The Optional Travel Insurance Scheme (OTIS) aims to provide affordable insurance coverage to railway passengers, making travel more secure without adding a financial burden. The scheme is voluntary and available only to Confirmed and RAC passengers who book tickets online through the IRCTC website or app.
Key Highlights of the Scheme:
- Premium: Rs 0.45 per passenger, per journey (inclusive of all taxes).
- Eligibility: Available only to Confirmed/RAC e-ticket holders.
- How to Opt-In: Passengers can opt for the insurance by checking a tick box during the online booking process.
- Policy Details: Sent directly via SMS and email by the selected insurance provider.
- Claims Process: Passengers must file claims directly with the insurance company. The Railways plays no role in claim settlements.
Vaishnaw emphasized the passenger-friendly nature of the initiative, highlighting how the optional insurance offers security at a nominal cost. Once selected, the policy link also allows passengers to fill in nomination details, ensuring that the process is transparent and streamlined.
He reiterated that the entire insurance process—from policy issuance to claims settlement—is handled by the insurance company, making it hassle-free for travelers.
