Daily bus rides across Delhi are set to become completely free and smarter for thousands of women and transgender commuters. The Delhi government is preparing to launch its much-awaited ‘Saheli Smart Card’ by mid-October, offering lifetime free travel on DTC and Cluster buses for eligible residents.
This initiative marks a significant upgrade from the existing Pink Ticket system, replacing paper-based passes with a photo-personalized smart card issued under the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) framework. The aim: secure, seamless, and identity-based access to public transport for Delhi’s women and transgender community.
What Makes the ‘Saheli Smart Card’ Different?
The Saheli Card isn’t just another travel pass. It’s a lifetime travel benefit, smartly integrated with India’s digital transit infrastructure. Here’s what commuters can expect:
- Free Bus Travel: Unlimited free rides on DTC and Cluster buses
- For Women and Transgender Residents: Applicable to Delhi residents aged 12 and above
- Smart Identity: Name and photograph printed on the card to prevent misuse
- Multi-Use Card: Can be recharged for use on other transit systems (metro, intercity buses), though free travel applies only to DTC and Cluster buses
- Nationwide Compatibility: Issued under the NCMC, allowing usage beyond Delhi in paid transit services
How to Apply for the Saheli Card
- Eligibility: Women and transgender individuals who are bona fide Delhi residents, aged 12+
- Registration: Online application through the DTC portal
- Verification: Select a participating bank and complete full KYC at the branch
- Documents Required: Aadhaar, PAN, Delhi address proof, passport-sized photo, and KYC documents as per the bank
- Card Delivery: Once verified, the smart card is dispatched to the applicant’s registered address by the issuing bank
Key Points to Note
- DTC will not directly issue the card; partner banks are responsible for issuance post-KYC.
- Some banks may charge a nominal fee for issuance or annual maintenance.
- Lost or damaged cards must be reported to the issuing bank for re-issuance.
- The card must be activated through the DTC’s Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) before use.
By digitising free travel for women and transgender persons, the Saheli Smart Card not only promotes inclusivity but also brings public transport in Delhi in line with national digital mobility goals. The card could be a game changer for daily commuters especially students, workers, and homemakers cutting costs while ensuring secure, dignified access to transportation.
With the rollout scheduled for mid-October, eligible residents are encouraged to prepare their documents and stay tuned for official registration dates on the DTC portal.
