The much-anticipated third chapter in James Cameron’s Avatar saga, titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, is officially set to hit theatres in India on December 19, 2025. The announcement comes alongside the reveal of the film’s first-look poster, which introduces a powerful new antagonist, Varang, played by Oona Chaplin.
Poised to be the biggest Hollywood release in India, Avatar: Fire and Ash will release in six Indian languages — English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada — expanding the film’s reach to an even broader audience.
This sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) continues the saga of Pandora and its people, with returning cast members including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver. The film promises to explore deeper layers of its lush world and complex characters, while introducing new threats and storylines.
Filming for Fire and Ash took place alongside The Way of Water in New Zealand, starting in September 2017 and wrapping up by December 2020 — a production timeline that spanned over three years. Despite facing multiple delays (nine in total), the film has now locked its global theatrical release.
The upcoming installment is being produced and distributed by 20th Century Studios, and serves as the third film in the five-part Avatar franchise. Future entries — Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 — are also in development and currently slated for 2029 and 2031 releases.
With the new villain Varang set to shake up the balance on Pandora, and James Cameron at the helm once again, Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to deliver a cinematic experience that raises the bar for visual storytelling and emotional depth.
