Indian Railways has announced a revision in passenger fares effective July 1, 2025, impacting long-distance travelers across second class, Mail/Express, and AC coaches. The hike is marginal but will affect those travelling over 500 km.
Passengers in ordinary second class will now pay 0.5 paise more per kilometer for journeys exceeding 500 km. For example, a 1,000 km trip will cost ₹2.50 more. Those in Mail/Express non-AC coaches will see a 1 paise per km increase amounting to ₹10 extra for a 1,000 km journey.
The steepest revision is for AC class travellers, where fares will rise by 2 paise per km, adding ₹20 more to a 1,000 km trip.
There is no fare increase for short-distance trips (under 500 km) in second class, suburban train commuters, or monthly season ticket holders. Major urban networks like Mumbai locals and Kolkata suburban trains remain unaffected.
The Railways has said the revision is aimed at marginally adjusting fares while keeping travel affordable for daily and suburban users.
The new fares apply to tickets booked for travel on or after July 1, 2025.
