The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled new rules that could significantly reshape the Oscars as we know them.

“Oscar voters must now view all nominated films before voting.”
This rule, now mandatory for all Academy members casting final-round votes, seeks to eliminate the long-standing issue of voters skipping lesser-known or lengthier films. In the past, voting was largely based on personal discretion, with some insiders admitting they hadn’t watched any nominees in certain categories. The new mandate is designed to ensure a level playing field and more informed decisions across the board.

“Refugee filmmakers can represent their current country for Oscar.”
The change affects the Best International Feature Film category, where previously, eligibility was tied to a filmmaker’s country of origin. Now, refugee and asylum-status filmmakers may submit their work through the country they currently reside in—marking a significant step forward in supporting global talent displaced by conflict or crisis.

In addition, amid rising concerns over artificial intelligence in filmmaking, the Academy clarified that “AI use won’t disqualify films; artistic merit is key.” This means while AI may be utilized in various capacities, a film’s eligibility will still hinge primarily on its creativity, storytelling, and human-driven artistic vision.

The 2026 Oscars will take place on March 15, 2026, with comedian Conan O’Brien confirmed as the host.
