Kedarnath Temple, one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage sites, is all set to welcome devotees once again on May 2, 2025. After its customary six-month winter closure, the revered shrine will reopen its gates at 7:00 AM, marking the beginning of the 2025 Kedarnath Yatra.

This spiritual journey, part of the Char Dham Yatra, attracts lakhs of devotees every year who brave the mountains for divine darshan and peace amid nature’s raw magnificence.

The Opening Ceremony

The opening date of Kedarnath Temple is decided annually on Mahashivratri, following traditional rituals held at the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, where Lord Kedarnath is worshipped during the winter months. The ceremonial opening in May is steeped in spiritual energy, drawing pilgrims and spiritual seekers from across the country.

  • Distance to Gaurikund: ~250 km
From the airport, taxis and buses are available to reach Gaurikund, the base point for the trek.

By Train:

The 16 km Trek to Kedarnath:

From Gaurikund, pilgrims begin a 16-kilometer uphill trek through rugged terrain surrounded by towering peaks, alpine forests, and glacial streams.
For those seeking an easier journey:

  • Pony, palanquin, and doli services are available along the route.
  • Helicopter services operate from Phata, Guptkashi, Sirsi, and Dehradun, ideal for elderly pilgrims or those short on time.

Before You Go: Travel Tips

  • Register Online: Mandatory registration is required for all pilgrims via the official Uttarakhand tourism portal.
  • Check Weather Updates: Mountain weather is unpredictable—layer up and carry rain protection.
  • Fitness First: Moderate physical fitness is recommended for the trek. Practice walking or light hiking if needed.

Kedarnath Yatra promises a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual experience wrapped in awe-inspiring natural beauty.
