Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) has announced that Terminal 1 (T1) at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) will resume full operations from April 15, 2025, marking the completion of its Phase 3A expansion.
As part of this plan, flights from Terminal 2 (T2) will be shifted to T1 while T2 undergoes renovations. This is a key step in modernising the airport to improve overall passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Terminal 2, which handles approximately 270-280 air traffic movements daily and serves more than 46,000 passengers, will close temporarily for refurbishment in April. The renovation is expected to take between four to six months, with the completion targeted for the September quarter. Upon reopening, T2 will be better equipped to manage an increased number of passengers.

Terminal 1’s upgrades include a range of modern features to accommodate 40 million passengers annually. Some of the new improvements include 100 check-in counters 36 Self Baggage Drop (SBD) kiosks and 108 Common Usage Self-Service (CUSS) kiosks.
In addition, the terminal will feature 20 Automated Tray Retrieval Systems (ATRS) for faster security checks, and the baggage handling capacity will be increased to 6,000 bags per hour, doubling the previous capacity. Ten additional baggage reclaim carousels will also be installed to improve passenger convenience.
The terminal has undergone a significant expansion, growing from 55,740 sqm to 206,950 sqm. This larger space now integrates both arrival and departure terminals, ensuring better passenger flow and overall operational efficiency. DIAL has notified airlines about the terminal shift and recommended that they adjust their operations accordingly.
These updates promise to enhance the passenger experience by reducing wait times and providing modern, efficient facilities at one of the country’s busiest airports.
